Eager to escape the watchful eye of her strict mother, Rose, the antics of her older brothers, Jack and Joe, and the erratic behavior of her sister Rosemary, Kick is ready to strike out on her own and is soon swept off her feet by Billy Hartington, the future Duke of Devonshire. But their love is forbidden, as Kick’s devout Catholic family and Billy’s staunchly Protestant one would never approve their match. When war breaks like a tidal wave across her world, Billy is ripped from her arms as the Kennedys are forced to return to the States. Kick gets work as a journalist and joins the Red Cross to get back to England, where she will have to decide where her true loyalties lie—with family or with love . . .”

Doug Burgess, Fogland Point in conversation with

Hank Phillippi Ryan, Trust Me

“Join us for a conversation between Doug Burgess, author of Fogland Point, and Hank Phillippi Ryan, author of Trust Me. (Fogland Point): David Hazard wanted nothing more than to forget his renegade family and the foggy New England village “on the wrong side” of Narragansett Bay where he grew up. When sudden tragedy brings him back to Little Compton to care for his grandmother during her struggle with dementia, he discovers her fragile memories may hold the key to a bizarre mystery half a century old – and perhaps to the sudden and brutal murder right next door.Once Chief of Police Billy Dyer names her as a witness, Grandma Maggie’s recollections become vital. But can they be trusted, especially in a town where everyone has a secret, including David himself? The investigation stalls. Then eccentric millionaire Marcus Rhinegold’s yacht disappears into the fog, bodies begin to wash ashore, and Maggie’s stories come vividly to life, setting off a chain of events both horrifying and hauntingly familiar. Puritans, gun-runners, Mafiosi, and a rogues’ gallery from past and present converge in the mists of the bay, challenging Billy with layers of deception. On Christmas Eve, he enlists David in a daring move to uncover the many truths surrounding Fogland Point. Trust Me is the chilling standalone novel of psychological suspense and manipulation that award-winning author and renowned investigative reporter Hank Phillippi Ryan was born to write. CAN YOU SPOT THE LIAR? An accused killer insists she’s innocent of a heinous murder. A grieving journalist surfaces from the wreckage of her shattered life.Their unlikely alliance leads to a dangerous cat and mouse game that will leave you breathless. Who can you trust when you can’t trust yourself?”

Nicole Chung, All You Can Ever Know

51i-40D6HiL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

“Debut memoirist Nicole Chung discusses her book with Celeste Ng, author of Little Fires Everywhere…What does it mean to lose your roots–within your culture, within your family–and what happens when you find them? Nicole Chung was born severely premature, placed for adoption by her Korean parents, and raised by a white family in a sheltered Oregon town. From childhood, she heard the story of her adoption as a comforting, prepackaged myth. She believed that her biological parents had made the ultimate sacrifice in the hope of giving her a better life, that forever feeling slightly out of place was her fate as a transracial adoptee. But as Nicole grew up–facing prejudice her adoptive family couldn’t see, finding her identity as an Asian American and as a writer, becoming ever more curious about where she came from–she wondered if the story she’d been told was the whole truth. With the same warmth, candor, and startling insight that has made her a beloved voice, Chung tells of her search for the people who gave her up, which coincided with the birth of her own child. All You Can Ever Know is a profound, moving chronicle of surprising connections and the repercussions of unearthing painful family secrets–vital reading for anyone who has ever struggled to figure out where they belong. Nicole Chung has written for The New York Times, GQ, Longreads, BuzzFeed, Hazlitt, and Shondaland, among other publications. She is Catapult magazine’s editor in chief and the former managing editor of The Toast.

Lu has swagger, plus the talent to back it up, and with all that—not to mention the gold chains and diamond earrings—no one’s gonna outshine him. Lu knows he can lead Ghost, Patina, Sunny, and the team to victory at the championships, but it might not be as easy as it seems. Suddenly, there are hurdles in Lu’s way—literally and not-so-literally—and Lu needs to figure out, fast, what winning the gold really means. Starting with National Book Award finalist Ghost, the Track series follows the four rookie members of a middle school track team.

Fleming provides a fresh, accessible, and irreverent take on everything that’s wrong with our “national conversation about race.” Drawing upon critical race theory, as well as her own experiences as a queer black millennial college professor and researcher, Fleming unveils how systemic racism exposes us all to racial ignorance–and provides a road map for transforming our knowledge into concrete social change. How to Be Less Stupid About Race is a call to action for everyone who wants to challenge white supremacy and intersectional oppression.”

Anne Boyd Rioux, Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women And Why It Still Matters

Meg-Jo-Beth-Amy-Cover-ntp7vsh6ayhv7a6k7b6x0lripjtlyl2tcivia983ie

“On its 150th anniversary, discover the story of the beloved classic that has captured the imaginations of generations. Soon after publication on September 30, 1868, Little Women became an enormous bestseller and one of America – and the world’s – favorite novels. When Anne Boyd Rioux read the novel in her twenties, she had a powerful reaction to the story. Through teaching the book, she has seen the same effect on many others. In Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, Rioux recounts how Louisa May Alcott came to write Little Women, drawing inspiration from her own life. Rioux also examines why this tale of family and community ties, set as the Civil War was tearing America apart, has resonated through later wars, the Depression, and times of changing opportunities for women.”

Rebecca Caprara (The Magic of Melwick Orchard) and Erin Cashman (Uncharted)

“This is going to be one of the best events of the year! Two local authors, both from Boxborough, have great novels out just a week apart from each other! First up is Rebecca Caprara’s debut novel, The Magic of Melwick Orchard. You may know Rebecca because her family owned the Acton School of Ballet for a very long time before turning it over to new ownership this summer. Rebecca’s book follows the story of a young girl who just can’t be a priority in her parents’ lives because of her ill sister is heartwrenching, but it is infused with a magic that will keep you up late at night finishing it. The book doesn’t come out until September, and we are so excited for it. Erin Cashman’s book, Uncharted, comes out a few days later. Hers is a gaenre-defying novel that is at once young adult, fantasy and mystery.  It tells the tale of teenage Annabeth, and a secret society that may have found the fountain of youth. But the book is so much more than that, as Annabeth grapples with love and loss, and has to summon the strength inside of herself to be brave and do what’s right, all while trying to unravel a mystery that has far more twists and turns than you would expect. We thought we had this book figured six times, and were wrong every single time! Both books are among our favorites of 2018. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be celebrating these two great ladies and their two excellent books!”

Bijan wants to pretend it never happened. He’s not ashamed of his Middle Eastern heritage; he just doesn’t want to be a poster child for Islamophobia. Lots of classmates rally around Bijan. Author Event with Christina Collins (After Zero), Jen Petro-Roy (P.S. I Miss You), and Beth Turley (If This Were A Story)

“This is going to be a great middle-grade panel discussion, led by three local authors who have debut novels — all geared toward middle-grade readers — out in 2018.

Christina Collins is a Maynard native who now lives across the pond in Northern Ireland. Her debut novel, After Zero, comes out Sept. 4, and is an incredibly moving story of what happens to a girl who decides to stop talking. The book has already received praise from Kirkus Reviews and Booklist, who says it’s “easy to root for” main character Elise.

Beth Turley lives in southeastern Connecticut, and her book, If This Were a Story, debuts on Aug. 28. Her book centers on a 10-year-old girl who deals with bullies at school through the power of stories. The book has earned praise from Booklist and Publishers Weekly, and has been compared to The Thing about Jellyfish.

Jen lives in Massachussetts, and her book, P.S. I Miss You, debuted in March. Two sisters are torn apart by strict Catholic parents, when the older sister, Cilla, becomes pregnant. Younger sister Evie is forbidden to speak to Cilla, who is sent away to live with her aunt, so instead she secretly sends her letters. That is, until Cilla stops writing back.

These women have written three excellent middle-grade novels that deal with mental health and we couldn’t be more excited to have them all to the store individually, never mind at the exact same time! Join us for this fabulous middle-grade event!”

“Harvard Book Store and Mass Humanities welcome Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer and historian DORIS KEARNS GOODWIN—the bestselling author of Team of Rivals and The Bully Pulpit—for a discussion of her highly anticipated latest book, Leadership: In Turbulent Times.
Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader? In Leadership, Goodwin draws upon the four presidents she has studied most closely—Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights)—to show how they recognized leadership qualities within themselves and were recognized as leaders by others. By looking back to their first entries into public life, we encounter them at a time when their paths were filled with confusion, fear, and hope. Leadership tells the story of how they all collided with dramatic reversals that disrupted their lives and threatened to shatter forever their ambitions. Nonetheless, they all emerged fitted to confront the contours and dilemmas of their times.”

“From the picture book dream team behind I Am Yoga and I Am Peace comes the third book in their wellness series: I Am Human. A hopeful meditation on all the great (and challenging) parts of being human, I Am Human shows that it’s okay to make mistakes while also emphasizing the power of good choices by offering a kind word or smile or by saying “I’m sorry.” At its heart, this picture book is a celebration of empathy and compassion that lifts up the flawed fullness of humanity and encourages children to see themselves as part of one big imperfect family—millions strong.”

An Interview With Author Louise Miller and Book Giveaway of The Late Bloomers’ Club

Today I’m sharing a special author interview and book giveaway!

Gilmore Girls fans, get your library requests and bookstore orders ready. Louise Miller is the author for you.

Miller, a Boston-based pastry chef is the author of this year’s standout summer read, The Late Bloomers’ Club and the completely charming, The City Baker’s Guide to Country Living (2017).

Both novels are set in small-town Vermont. Once you enter the world of Guthrie–Miller’s version of Star’s Hollow–you will not want to leave. I brought The Late Bloomers’ Club on vacation, devoured it in two days and then rushed to download The City Baker’s Guide to Country Living on my Kindle. Utterly delightful.

In The Late Bloomers’ Club we meet Nora, owner of the Miss Guthrie Diner (think Luke’s) and lifelong Guthrie resident.  Life takes a surprising turn when Nora mysteriously inherits a local farmhouse with 200 acres of land and her free-spirit younger sister comes back to town.

The City Baker’s Guide to Country Living offers a view of the people of Guthrie through the eyes of an outsider, Livvy Rawlings–a Boston baker who comes to work at the local inn. The way Livvy’s relationship with the town and her stern boss Margaret (a kindred spirit of Marilla from Anne of Green Gables if there ever was one) will melt your heart.

I’m thrilled to be able to share a conversation with Louise Miller on episode 4 of the new A Bookish Home Podcast.

You can also find this episode on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Be sure to subscribe to make sure you never miss an episode.

**BOOK GIVEAWAY**

I’m giving away a copy of The Late Bloomers’ Club to one lucky winner! To enter, follow A Bookish Home on Twitter and retweet the giveaway by Monday, September 10th.

An Interview with Anne Boyd Rioux, Author of Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story Of Little Women and Why It Still Matters

2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. For devoted fans of the March sisters, I can think of no better book to add to your shelf than a new title by Anne Boyd Rioux– Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story Of Little Women and Why It Still Matters.  The book comes out  on Tuesday, August 21st.

Anne Boyd Rioux appeared on a panel I attended at the annual Summer Conversations series put on by Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts. Rioux, a writer and professor at the University of New Orleans, offered insights on the relevance of Little Women in today’s world and one of my favorite topics– where the Alcotts end and the Marches begin. Although Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy isn’t officially available yet, I was thrilled to be able to pick up one of the early copies being sold at Orchard House.

As a lifelong Little Women fan, Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy was pure joy to read.  If you spent your childhood struggling to decide who got to be Jo and who was Beth, this is the book for you.

Interview with Anne Boyd Rioux

Anne Boyd Rioux and I spoke about the book earlier this month.  I’m excited to be able to share our conversation as the first episode of the new “A Bookish Home” podcast.

cropped-katherineschmidt

We discussed how fiction meets reality in the March sisters, Marmee’s relevance to mothers today, Jo’s impact on American women writers and much more. I hope you enjoy hearing Anne’s insights as much as I did!

Episode 1: A Conversation with Anne Boy Rioux, Author of Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy

Anne also mentioned that Little Women is a choice in the Great American Read from PBS. To learn more and find out how to vote visit another post Vote for “The Great American Read”!

I will have more interviews with authors, booksellers, librarians and more coming up soon on A Bookish Home, the podcast. You can subscribe in the iTunes Store to make sure you never miss an episode. And if you like the podcast, I would really appreciate it if you could submit a review to help people find it.

Five Picture Books for Back to School

Are you looking for a picture book to kick off the new school year with your students or children?

Here are five of my favorite back to school read alouds:

1. School’s First Day of School

Story by Adam Rex, Pictures by Christian Robinson

Empty-2

In this funny, charming story a brand new school awaits its first students: “It’s the first day of school at Frederick Douglass Elementary and everyone’s just a little bit nervous, especially the school itself. What will the children do once they come? Will they like the school? Will they be nice to him?” A read aloud of School’s First Day of School is sure to delight your students or children. For more, watch this PBS interview with illustrator Christian Robinson where he discusses his process and a topic I’m passionate about–the importance of children seeing themselves reflected in books:

2. Planet Kindergarten

By Sue Ganz-Schmitt, Illustrated by Shane Prigmore

Empty

Do you teach Kindergarten or have a child about to take this leap? This is the read aloud for you. In this adorable and clever story, a young boy ventures off to a strange new world, with different customs and alien inhabitants: Planet Kindergarten. Engaging and sure to excite young readers about this new adventure. Check out the book trailer for a sneak peak:

3. Wemberly Worried

By Kevin Henkes

Empty-4

Kevin Henkes is the author and illustrator of many beloved and award-winning picture books from Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse and Kitten’s First Full Moon, to Owen and Chrysanthemum. All of his books make fantastic classroom read alouds, but Wemberly Worried is one of my favorites and a wonderful choice to calm new school year anxieties for the pre-K to second grade set: “Wemberly worried about everything. Big things. Little things. And things in between. Then it was time for school to start. And Wemberly worried even more. If you ever worry (or know someone who does), this is the book for you.” For more, check out this Activity Guide from Kevin Henkes with a Wemberly coloring page, a “worry list”, recipes from the book and more.

4. When Sophie Thinks She Can’t…

By Molly Bang

900

If you are looking to kick off the new school year with a discussion about “growth mindset” and the importance of persistence, Molly Bang’s new book is an excellent read aloud choice. When Sophie Thinks She Can’t… is Molly Bang’s third Sophie book, you may recognize this character from When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry… or When Sophie’s Feelings are Really, Really Hurt. In this story, Sophie gets frustrated when she struggles to solve a math puzzle and shouts, “I CAN’T DO IT!” She doubts whether she will ever be “smart”: “Luckily Sophie’s teacher steps in. What does it mean to be smart? Using current, popular “mindset” techniques, Sophie’s class is taught that we get smarter when we exercise our brains, such as when we work harder at solving a puzzle. Struggling to solve a problem doesn’t mean “I can’t do it!” Sophie and her classmates just can’t do it. . .yet!” For more, you can watch this book trailer from Scholastic:

5. The Dot

By Peter H. Reynolds

51M-Jmkw6YL._SY465_BO1,204,203,200_

Are you hoping to inspire the kids in your life to take risks in the classroom this year and follow their creativity? Read them The Dot by Peter Reynolds: “Her teacher smiled. ‘Just make a mark and see where it takes you.’ Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can’t draw – she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. “There!” she says. That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and self-discovery.” To take the uplifting message one step further, you could also celebrate International Dot Day on September 15th with your students. I love the idea from this Educator Guide to do a  “Door Dots” activity,  “Have the classroom door covered in plain colored dots, waiting like a blank canvas.” After reading the book, students could “make their mark” and decorate one of the dots.

What books will you be sharing with the kids in your life to kick off this new school year?

Celebrate the Bookish Birthdays of Two Potters…

Are you looking to add a dose of literary fun to your life this week? Celebrate one of these upcoming bookish birthdays!

Two wonderful literary Potters, Harry and Beatrix have birthdays coming up. Harry Potter was born on July 31st and Beatrix Potter on July 28th.

Celebrate Harry Potter’s Birthday:

Attend a Harry Potter Birthday Party

If you or the little ones in your life are Harry Potter fans, check your local library or bookstore to see if they have a birthday celebration planned for Harry that you can attend. This is such a wonderful way to engage with the book and spark excitement for readers of all ages. My local library has a celebration planned for Muggles this Saturday:

Harry Potter Birthday Party at the Chelmsford Public Library, July 28th

screen-shot-2018-07-26-at-3-54-38-pm.png

The Harry Potter Birthday Party at the Chelmsford Library is an annual event that will have “games, crafts, activities, and of course– cake!”.

Harry Potter Escape Rooms at the Brookline Public Library, July 31st

If you live in the Boston area, The Brookline Public Library also has an exciting day planned. They will be having “Happy Birthday Harry Escape Rooms”.  “Witches and wizards of all ages are invited to join us to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday and the 20th Anniversary of his first adventure arriving on our shelves on July 31 from 10 AM to 8 PM. We will host trivia challenges (O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. levels), wizard games, and an escape the room challenge for teams.”

Can’t attend a Harry Potter birthday celebration? Why not throw your own?

If you’re looking to celebrate at home, I love this Sorting Hat Cupcakes recipe from Little Sugar Snaps. When you bite into them, the cupcake reveals which Hogwarts House you would be in!

Harry-Potter-Sorting-Hat-Cupcakes-3-2.jpg

Gather your friends for some cupcakes and nerdy Harry Potter debate over whether you’re actually a Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. If you have little ones, I also love the idea of eating these cupcakes during a family read aloud of Harry Potter or while you just chat about your favorite characters.

Read One of the 20th Anniversary Editions of Harry Potter

You can celebrate Harry’s birthday by checking out these new editions issued by Scholastic to celebrate the 20th anniversary of publication. (For more on celebrating this milestone check out Harry Potter Twentieth Anniversary Year).

The books feature new cover designs by Brian Selznik with the original interior illustrations of Mary GrandPré.

Enter to Win Tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

51il08aMn+L._SX341_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

I recently learned that there is a weekly lottery for tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway! Check out Today Tix Lottery: “Every Friday, we release 40 tickets for some of the very best seats in the theatre at $40 ($20 per Part) for every performance for the following week. Submit your entry from Friday at 12:01AM ET to Friday at 1:00PM ET.” For more information or to purchase general tickets visit: Harry Potter the Play

Celebrate Beatrix Potter’s Birthday:

Have some bookish fun with younger readers in honor of Beatrix Potter’s birthday on July 28th.

Read Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter

cover.jpg.rendition.242.374

I am such a big fan of Peter Rabbit. There is nothing better than snuggling up with my daughter while we read this classic. We’re also automatically in the Beatrix Potter spirit in her room since the nursery has a Peter Rabbit theme! This is a great time to enjoy this book with your children and share the magic of the story.

Watch a Peter Rabbit Read Aloud on Storyline

While the book is the perfect size for tiny hands and one-on-one sharing, I find it doesn’t work as well for reading to a larger group.  I actually love this Storyline Online read aloud with Rose Byrne and have shown it to kindergarteners in my school library. Everyone can see the illustrations and Byrne is a wonderful narrator. Storyline also has many other free read aloud videos.

Enjoy Peter Rabbit Coloring Pages

These Peter Rabbit coloring pages are available for free from Educational Coloring Pages. This would be a fun activity to follow your read aloud!

I hope these ideas add some bookish excitement to your home this week!

Annemarie Riley Guertin, How the Finch Got His Colors

9781945547775.jpg

“Our story hour in the children’s room will be hosted by local author Annemarie Riley Guertin. She’ll be reading her debut picture book, How the Finch Got His Colors.

Many years ago, before the world bloomed in magnificent colors, the Earth lay stark and gray.

The animals that graced its skies and roamed its lands were the colors of dirt, clay, and stone . . .

. . . until Rainbow descended to bestow her colors on the creatures of the world. Each bird asked for a bright and beautiful color: green for Parrot, red for Cardinal, and yellow for Canary. But will there be any colors left for little Gouldian Finch? He soon learns the power of patience and the beauty of all creatures.

Based on a Belgian folktale, this beautifully told and illustrated tale is a timeless treasure for every collection.”

Katherine Reynolds Lewis, The Good News About Bad Behavior

Friday, July 13th – 7:00pm at Porter Square Books

9781610398381

Journalist Katherine Reynolds Lewis will be at Porter Square Books on Friday to discuss her new book, The Good News About Bad Behavior: “Why don’t our kids do what we want them to do? Parents often take the blame for misbehavior, but this obscures a broader trend: in our modern, highly connected age, children have less self-control than ever…To stem this growing crisis of self-regulation, journalist and parenting expert Katherine Reynolds Lewis articulates what she calls The Apprenticeship Model, a new theory of discipline that centers on learning the art of self-control. Blending new scientific research and powerful individual stories of change, Lewis shows that, if we trust our children to face consequences, they will learn to adapt and moderate their own behavior.”

Sunday, July 15th – 1:00pm at Belmont Books

“We are thrilled to have bestselling author Tui Sutherland join us to read from her latest novel and eleventh book in the Wings of Fire series, The Lost Continent.

For centuries there have been rumors of another continent on the dragons’ planet — another land far across the ocean, populated by tribes of dragons very different from those we know. But there’s never been any evidence, and most dragons dismissed the rumors as fairy tales. Until now. Because it turns out the stories are true. And the other tribes are coming.”

LITTLE WOMEN IN THE 21st CENTURY: CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF INSPIRATION

Summer Conversational Series & Teacher Workshop

 July 15 – 19, Orchard House, Concord

Screen Shot 2018-07-01 at 1.23.35 PM

Calling all Alcott fans: Orchard House in Concord is offering their annual Summer Conversational series featuring Little Women scholars and authors! The week of sessions kicks off with a panel discussion at Trinity Episcopal Church with authors Anne Boyd Rioux (Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why It Still Matters), Megan Marshall (Margaret Fuller: A New American Life), John Matteson (Eden’s Outcasts: The Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Father and The Annotated Little Women), Joel Myerson (The Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson), and Daniel Shealy (Little Women Abroad: The Alcott Sisters’ Letters from Europe).

“A century and a half has passed since Louisa May Alcott took up her pen in May of 1868, wrote “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” and the classic American novel, Little Women, was born. Although Alcott initially had doubts this book would find a readership, publisher Thomas Niles persuaded her to try her hand at a “girls’ story,” and the gamble paid off:  Little Women has endured the test of time, having never been out of print, translated into more than 50 languages, and transformed into countless stage plays, musicals, films, a television series, opera, ballet, and even anime.

The book’s lasting universal appeal is testament to the vital way it tackles issues that define the human condition:  coming of age, dealing with loss, the importance of family, struggles of conscience — jealousy, anger, pride, vanity — loyalty, friendship and love, charity, independence, social responsibility, and personal empowerment.  Distinguished presenters in this year’s Series will guide participants in an examination of the difference Little Women has made over time in the world of literature, what it means to readers today, and why it is still important.”

Other session highlights include “Little Women at 150: A Conversation” with John Matteson, Anne Boyd Rioux’s “Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why It Still Matters” with a book signing, and  “Dateline Ireland: Behind the Scenes of the Little Women Miniseries” with Alcott expert and Orchard House Executive Director Jan Turnquist.

Thursday, July 19th – 7:00pm at Belmont Books

9780062699701.jpg“On October 1, 2015, Hurricane Joaquin barreled into the Bermuda Triangle and swallowed the container ship El Faro whole, resulting in the worst American shipping disaster in thirty-five years. No one could fathom how a vessel equipped with satellite communications, a sophisticated navigation system, and cutting-edge weather forecasting could suddenly vanish—until now.

Relying on hundreds of exclusive interviews with family members and maritime experts, as well as the words of the crew members themselves—whose conversations were captured by the ship’s data recorder—journalist Rachel Slade unravels the mystery of the sinking of El Faro.

Zach Schonbrun, The Performance Cortex

Friday, August 3rd – 7:00pm at Porter Square Books

9781101986332.jpg
“Why couldn’t Michael Jordan, master athlete that he was, crush a baseball? Why can’t modern robotics come close to replicating the dexterity of a five-year-old? Why do good quarterbacks always seem to know where their receivers are? On a quest to discover what actually drives human movement and its spectacular potential, journalist, sports writer, and fan Zach Schonbrun interviewed experts on motor control around the world. The trail begins with the groundbreaking work of two neuroscientists in Major League Baseball who are upending the traditional ways scouts evaluate the speed with which great players read a pitch….Whether it is timing a 95 mph fastball or reaching for a coffee mug, movement requires a complex suite of computations that many take for granted–until they read The Performance Cortex. Zach Schonbrun ushers in a new way of thinking about the athletic gifts we marvel over and seek to develop in our own lives. It’s not about the million-dollar arm anymore. It’s about the million-dollar brain.”

Maryanne Wolf, Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World

Wednesday, August 8th – 7:00pm at Harvard Bookstore

51SvsMdxLiL.jpg

“Harvard Book Store welcomes MARYANNE WOLF—acclaimed researcher, professor, and author of Proust and the Squid—for a discussion of her latest book, Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World.

A decade ago, Maryanne Wolf’s Proust and the Squid revealed what we know about how the brain learns to read and how reading changes the way we think and feel. Since then, the ways we process written language have changed dramatically with many concerned about both their own changes and that of children. New research on the reading brain chronicles these changes in the brains of children and adults as they learn to read while immersed in a digitally dominated medium.”

Keith O’Brien, Fly Girls: How Five Daring Women Defied All Odds And Made Aviation History

Thursday, August 9th – 7:00pm at Brookline Booksmith

“The untold story of five women who fought to compete against men in the high-stakes national air races of the 1920s and 1930s — and won.
Between the world wars, no sport was more popular, or more dangerous, than airplane racing. Thousands of fans flocked to multi‑day events, and cities vied with one another to host them. The pilots themselves were hailed as dashing heroes who cheerfully stared death in the face. Well, the men were hailed. Female pilots were more often ridiculed than praised for what the press portrayed as silly efforts to horn in on a manly, and deadly, pursuit. Fly Girls recounts how a cadre of women banded together to break the original glass ceiling: the entrenched prejudice that conspired to keep them out of the sky.”

Author Event Roundup: Massachusetts Edition

Want to enhance your reading life and build on the bookish enthusiasm in your home? Add an author event to your calendar.

There is nothing quite like getting to see an author read from their book and discuss their work in person. Those interactions make the reading experience that much richer.  If you bring one of the little ones in your life along for an event with a children’s book author the experience of hearing how the story came to life can be magical. For aspiring writers and illustrators of all ages, it is also hugely motivating and inspirational.

Check the events calendar at your local bookstore, library, and museums to find authors coming to your area. You can also follow authors on social media or visit their website to see when they might be going on book tour.

Here is a roundup of some of the author events coming soon to my corner of the world in Massachusetts:

A book from this event has also just zoomed to the top of my TBR list–House of Dreams: The Life of L.M. Montgomery by Liz Rosenberg.

“Middle grade books, for 8 to 12 year olds, can sometimes be unsung and misunderstood, stuck as they are between picture books for young children and YA books for teenagers. So what draws writers to middle grade? Join panel of authors Jeanne Birdsall, Cammie McGovern, Catherine Newman, Liz Rosenberg, and Lisa Yee as they discuss the joys, choices, and challenges involved in writing for this age group.”

While Jake is trapped in the web of his deceit, Phoebe is caught facing an unbearable choice. Her children refuse to see her if she remains at their father’s side, but abandoning him feels cruel and impossible. From penthouse to prison, with tragic consequences rippling well beyond Wall Street, Randy Susan Meyers’s latest novel exposes a woman struggling to survive and then redefine her life as her world crumbles.”

Plan A Bookish Vacation: Visit the World of Anne of Green Gables on Prince Edward Island

Bookish Destination: Prince Edward Island, Canada

Summer is almost here. This is the perfect time to plan a bookish vacation to immerse yourself in the world of one of your favorite characters. If you are an Anne of Green Gables fan or have a child in your life who has loved the book, a trip to Prince Edward Island would be a magical experience.

aoggcover.jpgAnne of Green Gables is the first book in the beloved series by L.M. Montgomery. As the book opens we meet eleven-year-old Anne Shirley, an orphan who has come to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert at Green Gables farm on Prince Edward Island.  What Anne thinks is a dream come true has actually been a mix-up–the orphanage was supposed to send a boy. We cross our fingers that Anne (and we as the reader) will get to stay in the wonderful world of small-town Avonlea, with its endearing characters and stunningly beautiful scenery.

To say Anne of Green Gables stole my heart as a child is an understatement–I’ve read the books more times than I can count and Anne is even my daughter’s namesake. I know there are many more kindred spirits out there who would love nothing more than to step into the world of this story. Since L.M. Montgomery drew on her own experiences living in PEI, traveling there is the next best thing.

Here are five stops to make on your bookish trip to Prince Edward Island:

1. Green Gables Heritage Place

ggheritageplace
Photo Via: http://www.parkscanada.gc.ca/greengables

This is the quintessential stop for Anne fans. Green Gables Heritage Place is in Cavendish (the real Avonlea) and this site is where L.M. Montgomery is believed to have drawn inspiration for Green Gables. The farmhouse belonged to cousins of Montgomery’s grandfather and is now part of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s National Historic Site.

You can take a tour of the house (furnished with items from the book like a dress with “puffed sleeves”), walk through the “Haunted Wood”, and stroll down “Lovers Lane”. This was the highlight of my visit to PEI when I made my Anne Shirley pilgrimage in 2014.  You can’t help but feel Anne’s presence as you take in this site and feel the story come to life.

2. The Anne of Green Gables Museum at the Campbell Homestead

L.M. Montgomery used to visit her Uncle John and Aunt Annie Campbell on this farm in Kensington and described it as the “wonder castle of my childhood”. She even chose to be married in front of the fireplace here. During your visit you can see the “Lake of Shining Waters”, take a carriage ride with “Matthew” as your driver, and view some of Montgomery’s belongings. Like the Green Gables Heritage Place, you definitely feel as though you are stepping into the setting of Montgomery’s books at this site. For devoted Anne fans looking for a wedding venue, you can even follow in Montgomery’s footsteps by holding your ceremony in the parlour.

3. Lucy Maud Montgomery Birthplace

Located in New London, this is the home where L.M. Montgomery was born in 1874. Highlights at this site include Montgomery’s personal scrapbooks and a replica of her wedding dress. A great stop to pay homage to an incredible author.

4. Dalvay By the Sea

dalvay
http://www.dalvaybythesea.com

If you’re a fan of the 1980s Anne of Green Gables movie adaptations, you must add Dalvay-by-the-Sea to your list. Known as the White Sands hotel in the movies, this is where Anne gives the “Highwayman” reading. Kate Middleton (a fellow Anne enthusiast) and Prince William even visited Dalvay-by-the-Sea on their Canadian tour in 2011. I recommend stopping by for high tea while you channel your inner Megan Follows.

For more visit: https://www.dalvaybythesea.com

5. Anne of Green Gables the Musical at the Homburg Theatre

Anne of Green Gables the Musical, showing in Charlottetown at the Homburg Theater is now in its 54th season. I have not gotten to see this one myself, but after looking at the trailer and listening to some of the soundtrack (both below) it is on my list for a future pilgrimage!

Anne of Green Gables The Musical Soundtrack

If you’re trying to convince your family or friends to make this Anne piligrimage with you, Prince Edward Island also has fantastic fresh seafood, beautiful scenery for long bike rides or camping, and pristine beaches.

Preparing for your Trip

Read

Read (or re-read for the hundredth time) Anne of Green Gables and the rest of the series.

You can also read the wonderful Emily books, which feature another of Montgomery’s heroines.

Listen

I recently listened to the entire Anne series again using Librovox’s free audiobooks. I enjoyed revisiting Anne of the Island and Anne’s House of Dreams again in particular.

annerachel.jpg

You could also request an audiobook from your library or listen to Rachel McAdams read Anne of Green Gables on Audible.

Share

If the little ones in your life are too young to listen to an entire novel, share one of these books with them. I love Anne of Green Gables: A Places Primer, a board book that highlights locations like “The Lake of Shining Waters” with gorgeous illustrations. For a more traditional retelling, I really enjoy Usborne’s picture book version of Anne of Green Gables.

Watch

Watch an Anne of Green Gables adaptation. In my opinion, nothing has topped the classic 1984 CBC movie version. I know this one by heart. Make it a viewing marathon and continue with the sequel!
