Celebrate Winter Reading

Summer reading seems to get all of the love, but this is my favorite time of year to be a reader. It’s time to curl up with a good book by the fire while you sip some hot chocolate. Heaven!

I have been promoting the joys of winter reading in my library this week. I’ve turned the library into a winter wonderland (complete with Harry Potter snowflakes and snow decorations, a fake fireplace, winter books galore, and blankets) and have invited students to wear pajamas on their library day.  After they choose books to read over vacation, they sit on one of the blankets and do some cozy reading. I even have “crackling fireplace” sounds playing (which make them think the fake fireplace is magic). I have found this to create such an amazing atmosphere of excitement and “book joy” this week and I think your household would love it too!

Declare your own winter reading day at home. Wear your coziest pajamas, get a fire going (or go the fake fire route) and ready the mugs of hot chocolate. If you really want to go the extra mile, your family could take an old or broken book and use the pages to make paper snowflakes for decorations. Then take out your “to be read” pile and dive in. You can read out loud to your children (particularly if they’re young), but don’t feel guilty about just reading an adult book that’s on your list. Seeing you absorbed in a book that you love is a powerful image!

I’ll be sharing my favorite winter reads over the coming days for adults and kids alike.

‘Tis the season to be reading!
